Moin und Hallo,
I am back, from my baby break and we have big news!
We’re moving! If you know me personally, which you probably do, if you’re reading this Substack, then this is no news for you. For everyone else: After almost two years of making and changing plans we’re moving to the other side of the world, aka the west coast of the US at the end of July. I obviously feel a mix of emotions, not to say, all the emotions at once, since this is a pretty life changing event, especially having a new born and not having been to the US before at all (not even speaking of living and working there -practicing my English as we speak/I write ;)).
I am motivating myself with the fact, that I will finally be able to wear all of my clothes all year round, since we’re leaving German Summer, aka rainy Hamburg, for sunny USA. Also I can finally shop my The Real Real wishlist without paying hundreds of Euros in taxes.
Well on the downside I have to move my life, aka my child, my dog and my clothes to the other side of the world, worrying if and how my green silk Christopher John Rogers suit and my vintage Chanel boots will make it to the US.
I will report back. Until then and since I am currently planning what the hell to pack in the few suitcases I can bring on the plane, waiting 3 months for the container to arrive with the rest of my belongings, I am thinking about what I really need in terms of clothes for the first weeks of living the American Dream.
To wear: Outfits to pack for the first weeks
Viewing some flats
It is still very much unclear, where we gonna live, so we will have to do a lot of house hunting once we’re arrived. The top means business, while the bottom, aka my vintage Louis Vuitton mules, bring the personality. This is how I want to be remembered.
Working out with a baby
Since I am the primary care taker of the little bebé in the beginning, I don’t know how often I can actually go somewhere to workout, but when I go I want to make sure I am wearing the right thing. It’s giving: sporty but elegant, vibrant but hands-on. The straw bag says: this workout is my kind of (and only) vacation.Grab a coffee
I think you could say a lot about this outfit, which is probably not too bad if you’re in a new city and the person you see the most is the barista of your local coffee shop, or the other lonely visitor who gets his iced almond milk latte. “Do you ride a motorcyle?” “No.” “Do you run?” “Yes, I do.” “Where did you get this beautiful Chanel bag?” “I bought it online from an Italian Chanel collector, as a gift for my 30th birthday.” and so on and so on.
Sitting in my garden
or the terrace or some kind of bench outside, watching the dog have zoomies, pushing the baby, reading a book with one hand while trying to stay hydrated:
Meeting my husbands colleagues
Okay this is maybe a bit too sporty and too casual, but then again what they see is what they get.Small summer getaway
I’m talking Cuba or Mexiko or somewhere very warm with great cocktails, the ones that you didn’t have since finishing uni. Perfect moment to take out this cute purple Roberto Cavalli number that I would ideally pair with some crochet shorts or some long white linen skirt, which hopefully fit me again by the time I board the plane.
Grocery shopping
It could have been “Going to Erewhon, buying a celeb smoothie” but since we’re not going to live in the LA moment (at least for the time being) it is just grocery shopping because thats what I will be doing most of the time I guess. But we’re still in California after all, so you might as well get papped while leaving the supermarket. I’ll just pretend I am one of the Olsen Twins, cap and big sunglasses (and a clean mirror):
To be inspired: Screenshots of May
I thought I’d introduce this new section including screenshots of the last month, because my screenshot folder practically includes all my thoughts. Okay there are also a lot of screenshots of whatsapp messages with friends and family, horoscopes on Co-Star and snippets from baby videos. Below you find a selection of things I thought about in May:
Things I want to read:
My friend recommended Lucy Jones’ book “Matrescence” and this accompanying article in the New Yorker. In the book Jones shares her experience with motherhood and all its different nuances, including a lot of research on the maternal body and brain, as Jones is not only a journalist but also a science writer.
In
newsletter I first came across the book “Languishing” bei Dr. Corey Keyes, leading me to this article in the New York Times . This is where I first read about “revenge bedtime procrastination”, which apparently the journalist Daphne K. Lee described as staying up at night to reclaim the freedom we’ve missed during the day and I felt very seen.I also ordered a book about Josephine Baker in May after reading this on Instagram @marzyjane: “Lived so many lives, I feel like Josephine Baker!! // I love Josephine Baker. She lived a dynamic life and did what she wanted! In her lifetime she overcame extreme poverty, was a famous dancer and performer, a civil rights activist, a pilot and spy, was bisexual and married 4 times, adopted 12 children from all nationalities, loved animals, made France her second home, was adored across the world by fans, was friends with Princesses and Artists, and was a beloved pioneer!! Next time someone tells you you’re doing too much or even worse, YOU doubt yourself, look to Mrs. baket and keep pushing. // xxml”
Things I want to recreate:
Can’t stop thinking about this pimped Fendi Baguette, the Adidas Sambas with pearls and the combination of green in pink in Nicole Huisman’s beautiful bathroom.
Things I want to buy:
Love these colorful socks by Mads Norgaard, these tropical Capri pants by Gimaguas and these mesh ballerinas by Loeffler Randall.
After seeing these Emma Hope’s Shoes at D’or, a nicely curated vintage designer boutique in Hamburg, I have been in an Emma Hope rabbit hole, looking for a pair of embroidered and bejewelled mules or sandals like the ones above (which were unfortunately too big for me). Also I would really not mind owning this “XL Le Pliage Panier” straw bag from Longchamp and these mules from A.W.A.K.E. Mode.
Things I want to wear:
After seeing Paloma Elsesser in this Margiela disco ball hat I am looking for my blue crochet number, but can’t find it in the mess that is my closet at the moment. Loved the Gucci Cruise 2025 show and especially loved the oversized jackets, been looking for an old oversized Barbour coat for ages now and would really love to recreate this look. For the next summer vacation I pinned this look with the little crochet shorts, flip flops and an open linen dress above, as well as this kaftan dress, capri pants and hat combination. Since finding an old Gaultier for Dior FW 1998 lace top and matching skirt in the most amazing pink and yellow color combination I am obsessed with this collection (and the campaign shoot with Kate Moss) and cant wait to wear this.
Things I want to eat:
This is a stunning veggie and egg platter, love how you make basic things looks very good and appetizing. Also can’t go wrong with tofu, spring onions and spicy marinade. For my first New York trip ever, that is not planned yet but will happen rather sooner than later I really want to eat those pancakes at Golden Diner.
In diesem Sinne bleibt bunt und fröhlich! Falls ihr Stylingfragen oder sonstige Wünsche habt, schreibt mir gerne einen Kommentar oder eine E-Mail an fitcheckbynora@gmail.com .
